As Christians, various scriptures call us to be “in the world” but “not of the world” – and yet to “set our minds on things above.” And they call us to “submit to earthly authority” – and yet “to obey God and not humans.” Much of the culture of the Biblical authors was very different from our own. But they, like us, lived in a particular time, space, and culture and were faithful to God in their situation. Discerning how to apply Scriptural principles to our time and place can be challenging. How can we, with God’s help, learn to recognize when we are being shaped by our culture, and how can we decide how God wants us to respond in our specific circumstance?
