The Music of Lent

Lent is a time to remind ourselves of our creatureliness, our need for the mercy, forgiveness, and help we can only find in the One who has ransomed us from our fallen state through His triumph on the cross: Jesus.

At its core, art is a consideration of life, a way of making metaphor out of our experiences by putting them into richer words, images, movements, and sounds. When we experience art, it can help us gain knowledge about God, about ourselves, that we might not otherwise learn through more traditional paths of learning like a book, a lecture, or an infographic.

One of the things music can do more specifically is to help us enter more fully into time. Think about how you experience time: do you find yourself zoning out and ignoring time, getting pulled into mindlessness? Or perhaps do you grow impatient with whatever season of life in which you find yourself and resolve to just wait until it’s over so you can move on to the next thing? As human beings, time is something we cannot escape, and I’d like you to consider the possibility that it is even something that the Father has given us to teach us about Himself.

Lent is a time to remind ourselves of our creatureliness, our need for the mercy, forgiveness, and help we can only find in the One who has ransomed us from our fallen state through His triumph on the cross: Jesus. To help us enter into time in this season, I’ve put together these two playlists as a sort of soundtrack to your devotional time, your commutes, and whenever else you like to listen to music, both for pleasure and for edification. As a further challenge, I’d love to invite you to sit and listen to a track or two at a time while doing nothing else, free from distraction, and praying for the Holy Spirit to reveal to you your vocation for this season.
