Families,
Navigating the holidays when you attend a church that follows the church calendar can make for an interesting juxtaposition. Our culture is determined to thrust the joy and sparkle (and consumerism) of Christmas in our faces earlier and earlier. Meanwhile in Advent, we practice sitting with Jesus in that space between the already and the not yet.
Advent begins December 1st, when we get ready to enter the mystery of Christmas. How do you prepare to enter such a wonderful mystery, and how do you help your children do the same? There is no right or wrong way to do Advent, but the practice of slowing down and waiting for our Savior helps us make room in our hearts to wonder at His love. As Ashley Wallace says, “Advent in the home puts the world in its proper place.”

God With Us: Advent Devotional:
Dec 1 - Dec 25th
These weekday devotions involve lighting the Advent wreath, Bible reading and storytelling, reflection, and prayer. They are fun to do after dinner, and children get excited about being led to bed by candlelight—a beautiful way to end the day.
Jesse Tree Ornaments:
Dec 1 - Dec 25th
The Jesse Tree is an Advent tradition that traces the lineage of Jesus throughout the Old Testament. Each day there is a scripture reading and an ornament to color. A good activity to give kids at the breakfast table or while you are preparing dinner.
Feast Days: Dec 6th & Dec 13th
Learn about some December saints. Try some new recipes. Plop chocolate coins in your children’s shoes on St. Nicholas Day. Help your child make a St. Lucia crown, and see if it inspires them to bring you breakfast in bed!
